The Irish Spring Cereal Recommended List has been released for 2012.

Spring Wheat

Sparrow holds the largest share of the spring wheat available for spring 2012. Sparrow has a very robust disease package as well as very good grain quality (Falling No. 352, Protein 11.3%).

While Granary has a lower relative yield, it still maintains a very strong following amongst growers. Granary will represent 22% of the available spring wheat seed.

Raffles has now been on the list since the year 2000, however it remains one of the most reliable spring wheats on the market and despite its age compares well against some of the newer varieties. Raffles will represent 20% of the available spring wheat seed.

Spring Oats

Binary remains the highest yielding variety on the list at 108%, Binary has impressed millers with its large white grain. Binary scores the highest rating on the list for mildew at 7/9.

Circle stands out for its straw strength while also producing grain which is accepted by the milling trade. Growers have found that Circle is capable of handling higher levels of nitrogen due to its excellent straw strength; these higher levels of N also translate into higher yields and quality in the field.

Barra is still the benchmark for quality against which all other varieties are compared. When it comes to choosing an oat variety to maximise your selling opportunities, Barra is still the variety of choice.

Spring Barley

SY Taberna has been added to the list for the first time and has a yield rating of 102%. The yield ratings for the spring barley varieties remain quite flat with only a gap of 3% between the lowest and highest yielding varieties.

For growers who are trying to decide which varieties to plant, one good pointer is to choose a variety which has proven reliable over a number of seasons.

An example of a reliable variety would be Frontier. While Frontier was first listed in 2005, it remains the no. 1 variety of choice in many areas – particularly the south east. Anecdotal evidence suggests that Frontier has a greater ability to cope with stressful conditions such as drought and water-logging in the spring.

It has been noted that many of the spring barley varieties on the market struggle to achieve good Bushel weights. This has also been noted by the cereal breeders who have worked hard to bring to the market such varieties as Chance. Chance is an early ripening type which can deliver very good yields and particularly high Bushel weights. A limited quantity of Chance seed is available this spring.

Data sheets on all Goldcrop cereal varieties are available under the Cereals heading in the Arable seeds section of this website.
